The trustees are responsible for the policies and strategies of Action Medical Research and give their medical, financial and business skills and expertise on a voluntary basis. The council of trustees meets four times a year and is supported by a number of advisory committees.
Phil was elected Chair in July 2014. He has been a trustee and member of the charity’s Investment and Audit Committee since January 2012, and brings a wealth of financial experience within commercial and charitable sectors.
Charles Jackson joined the council in October 2006, and is the Chair of the Investment and Audit Committee.
Trained as a doctor at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington and worked, mostly in paediatrics, in a number of London hospitals before having children. Since then she has been involved in voluntary fundraising for a number of children's charities. Esther became a trustee in May 2012.
Professor Sarah Bray BA MPhil PhD
Professor in Developmental Biology at Cambridge University and is chair of the Scientific Advisory Panel. Sarah joined the council in January 2012.
Dr Wendy R Ewart PhD
Dr Ewart joined the council in July 2014. She is a Biomedical science strategist and consultant and was previously Deputy Chief Executive at the Medical Research Council. Prior to this Dr Ewart was appointed as Head of Strategy for the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London. She also spent time at the Wellcome Trust where she managed the Mental Health and Neuroscience programme and subsequently the Trust’s population studies programme.
Professor Mark Gardiner
Chair, Scientific Advisory Board, Action Medical Research 2002-2005 and Professor of Paediatrics, University College London, 1991 to 2010. Professor Gardiner became a trustee in February 2009.
Professor Andrew J T George MA PhD DSc
Professor George was Chair of the Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) January 2008 - January 2012. Until September 2013 he was Professor of Molecular Immunology at Imperial College London and Director of the Graduate School and the School of Professional Development. In August 2014 Professor George took up a new position of Deputy Vice Chancellor (Education and International) at Brunel University. Professor George is also Chair of the UK's National Research Ethics Advisors' Panel. He has been a trustee since January 2008.
A retired investment banker, Mr Gibbs is a member of the charity’s Investment and Audit Committee, and has been a member of the council since October 2006.
Caroline Hume-Kendall joined the trustees in July 2013. She worked in financial PR before setting up a specialist photography company, which she now runs. Caroline has been involved in many fundraising projects and is a keen sportswoman.
Nick Peters joined the trustees in September 2013 and is also a member of the charity’s Investment and Audit Committee. With an accountancy background, Nick currently works for Fidelity Worldwide Investments as a Portfolio Manager. He has participated in a number of sporting events in the past, including Action’s Race the Sun in 2012.
A long standing supporter of Action Medical Research Val Remington-Hobbs joined the council in January 2010. She brings a wealth of experience as a volunteer fundraiser and as County Chair, Suffolk, and Chair of Stowmarket Committee.
