Action End2End 2013 frequently asked questions

How much does it cost?

  • Non-refundable deposit of £199 to secure your place on the event
  • Commitment from you to fundraise a minimum sponsorship of £3,000 for Action Medical Research of which £1,259 must be paid by 7 May 2013 to finalise your place on the ride.

What’s included?

This is an all-inclusive event (excluding alcohol and items of a personal nature) so this means:

  • All meals (excluding breakfast in Land’s End)
  • 10 nights’ hotel accommodation (including hotel in Inverness)
  • Logistical support – medics, mechanics, marshals, safety vehicles
  • Daily baggage transfer service
  • Secure bike storage at hotels
  • Serviced rest-stops including snacks and drinks
  • Dedicated fundraising support from Action Medical Research
  • Welcome pack, nutritional advice, training guidelines, pre-event briefing
  • GPS route map
  • Online forum.

What’s not included?

Items of a personal nature e.g:

  • Bike (we recommend a road bike or a touring/hybrid with slick tyres)
  • Insurance (recommended)
  • Travel to and from the event start and finish
  • Bike transportation to and from the start and finish
  • Accommodation in Penzance
  • Breakfast on the first day.

What optional extras are available?

A limited number of single rooms are available for a supplementary charge (subject to availability). The additional cost for a single room is £300. Please contact us for further information.

What’s the food like?

We know you need to be well-fuelled to complete this challenge; food on trip will be plentiful and varied including:

  • Breakfast and dinner at your accommodation
  • Buffet style lunch
  • Two daily rest-stops with drinks and snacks
  • A fantastic celebration dinner in Inverness.

What is the accommodation like?

Accommodation is in 2/3-star hotels, picked for their proximity to our routes.

The accommodation will be twin shared with en-suite washing facilities.

Accommodation the night before the ride is not included, but we can recommend hotels nearby on request.

A typical day?

The ride is challenging and to make the most of daylight, and to enjoy the route we will be rising early and typically spending 8 – 9 hours in the saddle.

A daily routine:

  • Breakfast in the hotel, followed by daily route brief
  • Please note, daily route cards with essential information will be issued to all riders
  • Between 80 – 120 miles cycling a day
  • Morning rest stop, main lunch stop, and afternoon rest stop
  • Support vehicles will set the route and be available in case of problems
  • Rest and lunch stops will be in the open (with gazebo shelter) close to the road.

How do I get to the start at Land’s End?

Information will be issued six months prior to the event to enable you to book your journey to and from the event. This will include details of recommended trains to Penzance, accommodation near the start point, and airlines and trains from Inverness.

How do I get from the finish at John o'Groats to Inverness for the final night’s accommodation and celebratory meal?

There will be a transfer service for all participants and bikes from John o’Groats to the event hotel in Inverness where the riders’ celebration dinner and overnight accommodation is included. You will be responsible for transporting yourself and your bike home from that point.

Transporting my bike?

We will send you details of a bike courier service you can book to get your bike to your start hotel, or back from Inverness. This information will be sent to you closer to the event date.

How fit do I need to be?

This challenge requires a high level of stamina. The more time you spend in the saddle and on the road before the event, the more you will enjoy the experience! Event specific training guidelines will be included in your welcome pack. In addition Action Medical Research organises several 100-mile rides throughout the country and we encourage you to join one or more of these as part of your training regime.

What insurance do I need?

We strongly recommend that you take out specific bike insurance in respect of this event to protect against theft, damage, or loss. We also advise that you check your Home Contents insurance policy (if you have one) to see what it covers. Travel insurance is also highly recommended as should you have an accident or emergency at any point in the weeks leading up to, and whilst on the trip, and not be able to take part, your tour costs will be non-refundable.
