A 100-mile challenge from Bristol and Bath to London

The Action 100 Bike Ride challenge is aimed at cyclists who are prepared to ride 100 miles in one day for charity secure in the knowledge that all support is on hand to help participants complete the distance. In 2008, we are delighted to have worked with our sponsors, Barcan Woodward Solicitors.

The Action100 Bristol or Batht to London bike ride for Action Medical ResearchThe idea came from Brenda Dickinson, a fundraiser for Action Medical Research. She asked 100 riders to take part in a 100-mile bike ride and raise £100 each - and the first Action 100 Bike Ride was born.

Now, 27 years later, the ride is still going strong and a group of volunteers still organise this annual event to raise much needed funds for the charity. To date the ride has raised more than £965,000 and we hope that with your help, we will break through the £1 million mark.

Why it's so important to help raise funds for Action Medical Research

We are a national medical research charity dedicated to preventing and treating disease and disability by funding vital medical research into a range of conditions. As an organisation we have:

  • made a major contribution to the British polio vaccine
  • were responsible for much of the testing of the rubella (German measles) vaccine
  • pioneered hip replacement surgery (the Charnley hip)
  • introduced the medical application of ultrasound
  • discovered the importance of folic acid in the prevention of spina bifida
  • contributed to the development of monitoring systems routinely used on the brain following traumatic injury
