Brave the Beacons

Press Release June 2008

This September (13), twenty teams will pit their wits and fitness as they attempt to navigate the Brecon Beacons to help raise vital funds for national health charity Action Medical Research.  This is no ordinary challenge; as each team will choose to complete the route in their own way, navigating by orienteering, mountain biking, canoeing, trekking running, and/or climbing/abseiling.

This fantastic multi-activity event is for all levels of ability. It is a game of brain and brawn and the winners will be those who make the right choices along the way! The adrenalin-pumping day will be a great way to explore the fantastic Brecon Beacons National Park, and to try your hand at many different activities with your friends.

Adventurers will be raising money for Action Medical Research’s Touching Tiny Lives fundraising campaign, which aims to give the most vulnerable babies in this country a better start in life. More research is needed to give us a real understanding of the conditions that put mothers and babies at risk, and enable doctors to find new treatments.

If you think you have what it takes to “Brave the Beacons” then sign up today by going to www.action.org.uk/brecon. Limited spaces so don’t miss out on a challenge of a lifetime!

STOP PRESS Summer special: sign up in the month of June and you will only have to raise £1500 to take part!

Why it's so important to help raise funds for Action Medical Research

We are a national medical research charity dedicated to preventing and treating disease and disability by funding vital medical research into conditions affecting both children and adults.

As an organisation we have;

  • Made a major contribution to the British polio vaccine.
  • Were responsible for much of the testing of the rubella (German measles) vaccine.
  • Pioneered hip replacement surgery (the Charnley hip).
  • Introduced the medical application of ultrasound.
  • Discovered the importance of folic acid in the prevention of spina bifida.
  • Contributed to the development of monitoring systems routinely used on the brain (following traumatic injury).

With such a breadth of research taking place, Action Medical Research has a relevance to every person living in the UK.

Search our project database for more details of the exciting projects taking place up and down the country.
