Kilimanjaro frequently asked questions

Question: Is altitude a problem?
Answer: The itinerary has been designed to allow an extra day to acclimatise at Horombo Hut to help reduce the effects of altitude. You may suffer from headaches, shortness of breath and nausea as we ascend, but walking steadily, at your own pace, and keeping hydrated will help limit these effects. If you have any medical conditions you should consult your GP.
Question: How fit do I have to be?
Answer: This is a challenging trek and you will need to have trained hard and have established a good level of fitness. We will send you a training guide and will keep you up to date with regular newsletters to keep you motivated. Don’t worry, it is not a race and you won’t be left behind.
Question: Will I have to carry my own kit?
Answer: No. On the trail local porters will carry your main luggage, all you will need to carry is your day bag containing water, waterproofs, camera etc.
Question: Do I need specialist kit?
Answer: You will need a pair of good quality walking boots and a 3-4 season sleeping bag. These are all available at good high street shops. A kit list will be sent to you in your welcome pack.
Question: Where will we stay on the trail?
Answer: Accommodation on the route will be in basic huts, most sleep between 6-8 people with the Kibo Hut sleeping up to 20.
Question: What does the registration fee cover?
Answer: The entire £299 non-refundable registration fee comes to Action Medical Research. It is used to fund all administration involved in organising the trek such as resources, staffing, marketing, information packs and advertising.
Question: When do I have to raise the sponsorship by?
Answer: We require that you bank at least 80 per cent of the minimum fundraising total at least 10 weeks prior to our departure to Kilimanjaro, which means you need to have raised £3,000 by 26 July 2012. The final deadline for the full amount to be banked is eight weeks after we return from Kilimanjaro, 10 December 2012.
Question: What happens if I can’t raise the money?
Answer: If you cannot raise the £3,000 by 26 July 2012, you are liable to forfeit your place on the trek or you may choose to make up the difference yourself. Remember to let us know if you have any difficulties, we are here to help you.
