New vaccine for childhood illnesses

Action Medical Research is funding research for a possible new vaccine that could protect young children from meningitis. Scientists are working on a potential nasal spray against the pneumococcus bacterium, which causes serious infections including pneumonia, meningitis and blood poisoning.

Severe skin disease research under way

The charity is funding research on the genetics of a rare disorder that causes babies to be born with very hard skin and deformed facial features. This could lead to more advanced diagnosis and treatment for harlequin ichthyosis, a condition that leaves children susceptible to infection and breathing difficulties.
