Cycling world champion supports Action

Olympic gold medallist Geraint Thomas MBE has become an ambassador for Action Medical Research’s cycling programme. Money raised through these events helps fund vital medical research for the benefit of babies, children and young people. Geraint said: “I attended the charity’s Champions of CycleSport Dinner last November and saw for myself just how important their fundraising is.” Sign up for a ride today.

Key step forward in preventing premature labour

Researchers have made an important step in the search for a novel treatment to help prevent premature birth. Using funding from Action, the team focused on finding a way of stopping contractions when labour starts too early. They are confident their progress could potentially lead to a drug treatment that could stop these early contractions. About 60,000 babies are born prematurely each year in the UK.

Celebrating research into rare conditions

We marked Rare Diseases Day (28 February) by celebrating the pioneering research we are funding, such as our project on Rett syndrome supported by the R S Macdonald Charitable Trust. Gwenda, whose daughter Grace has the serious, developmental disorder, met the team who could make a real difference to Grace’s life. Many families across the UK are coping with the reality of a child with a rare and devastating disease for which there is no cure. Watch Grace’s inspiring story.
