Thirty trekkers have just completed an inspirational five-day trek to Machu Picchu, following in the footsteps of the Incas across spectacular mountains to heights of 4,800m. All pulled together as a team to make the final climb to the sun gate for those first views down to the citadel on the 100th anniversary of its discovery. To mum Sally it’s a miracle Jack can name the colours in his book: two years before he was born blind with a genetic condition called primary aphakia. Sally had a healthy pregnancy and no family history of eye problems, yet she and her husband carried rare changes in the same gene which led to her son’s condition. Thankfully, money left in the will of one Action supporter helped fund research into Jack’s condition and answered the family's concerns.
His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh recently launched our new 60th anniversary fundraising initiative, which will raise money for new Scotland-based projects over the next five years. A drinks reception was held at the Palace of Holyroodhouse for 150 specially-invited guests, including some of the best medical researchers working in Scotland.
Premature birth is the biggest killer of babies in the country: over 60,000 babies are born prematurely in the UK every year and around 1,500 die. Action funded research in London and Edinburgh to look further into the causes. One team identified a way to suppress contractions, which could lead to future treatments, while another investigated the role of inflammation in preterm labour.
