Stroke is a leading cause of disability, affecting over 100,000 people a year in the UK. A common problem following stroke is loss of movement in the arm and hand. This is due to damage to the nerve connections between the brain and spinal cord, which are essential for movement. Even when some of these nerves are damaged, rehabilitation can help promote recovery. By using novel brain imaging techniques, Miss Newton aims to identify how the brain uses the remaining connections to allow recovery, thus gaining valuable insight into what promotes effective rehabilitation.
