Congenital heart disease in children
Congenital heart disease includes a range of heart problems that develop in the womb before a baby is born. As one of the most common birth abnormalities, they affect almost one in 100 babies born each year in the UK.
These heart problems can be serious and sadly, some children lose their lives. But, thanks to advances in early diagnosis and treatment, around eight out of ten children with congenital heart disease will now grow up to become adults.
Our successes
The charity was founded in 1952 by Duncan Guthrie. Early research funded by the charity helped to develop the first oral polio vaccine. Polio affected the lives of many thousands of children, including our founder Duncan Guthrie's own daughter, Janet.
Since then we’ve been saving and changing lives through medical research, funding some of the most amazing breakthroughs.
