Crime writer Caro Ramsay celebrates charity’s 60th anniversary and helps raise £3,500

12 September 2012
On Sunday 2 September, 150 ladies rubbed shoulders with popular crime writer Caro Ramsay to celebrate the 60th anniversary of children’s charity Action Medical Research.

The popular Brig O’Doon Hotel by the River Doon in Alloway river bank was the venue for the diamond lunch organised by the Maybole and Girvan Committee which raised an impressive £3,500 for the charity.

Guest speaker Caro Ramsay, whose fourth book, Blood of Crows has just been voted Waterstone's Scottish book of the month, has been a keen supporter of the charity for several years.

Caro says: “It was very special to be invited to be a part of the 60th anniversary of a charity which is immensely close to my heart. Action’s events are always very well put together and this one was no different. My friend’s daughter has Rett Syndrome and I totally understand how important it is to support the fantastic work of Action Medical Research.”

This year’s gala event was a league above the annual buffet lunch at the Maybole town hall every September.
The guests were welcomed by a piper and treated to entertainment by local singer Gemma Scorbie, The afternoon also had a variety of stall with gift items and a superb raffle.

Janet Balcombe, Fundraising Manager for Action Medical Research Scotland said: “I have rarely enjoyed an event as much as this. It was very relaxing, just like having lunch with friends. It is also fitting that the committee ladies had this chance to relax and enjoy their lunch. Usually they are working all day but the hotel did us proud! They are a great bunch of ladies and always on the lookout for others to join them and have some fun fundraising for the charity."

This year Action Medical Research celebrates 60 years of vital research. The charity is currently supporting work around meningitis, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, premature birth and some very rare conditions that severely affect children.

Action Medical Research - the leading UK-wide medical research charity dedicated to helping babies and children - is celebrating 60 years of vital research in 2012. We’ve been funding medical breakthroughs since we began in 1952 and have spent more than £100 million on research that has helped save thousands of children’s lives and changed many more. Today, we continue to find and fund the very best medical research to help stop the suffering of babies and children caused by disease and disability. We want to make a difference in:

• tackling premature birth and treating sick and vulnerable babies
• helping children affected by disability, disabling conditions and infections
• targeting rare diseases that together severely affect many forgotten children.

But there is still so much more to do. Make 2012 a special year and help fund more life-changing research for some of the UK’s sickest babies and children.
