The mechanisms involved in the initiation and progress of labour and the timing of delivery are to a large extent unknown. Uncoordinated muscular contractions of the uterus may lead to prolonged labour and/or the need for Caesarean section, along with an associated increased risk of complications.
Dr Pierce’s project will investigate the detailed mechanisms of labour. Understanding of these mechanisms could eventually lead to new treatments that may decrease the need for Caesarean section. It could also help prevent premature labour, thus averting the many problems which face the premature baby.
