Over our 50-year history, Action Medical Research has touched the lives of everyone in the UK. Research funded by us has brought about some of the most important medical breakthroughs of the last century, including:

  • Britain’s first polio vaccine
  • Pioneering hip replacement surgery
  • Helping develop medical use of ultrasound scanning
  • Testing the rubella vaccine
  • The discovery of the role of folic acid in pregnancy in preventing spina bifida
  • The specialised treatment of burns injuries in children
  • New treatment for epilepsy
  • Development of communication aids for severely disabled people
  • Development of the shapeable “matrix” wheelchair for severely disabled people
  • The ‘Tools for Living’ programme
  • Production of a new diet which helps children with liver disease
  • Development of a new blood typing technique for babies in the womb
  • Major advancements in the treatment/knowledge of osteoporosis, nerve repair, hydrocephalus and myasthenia gravis.

There are currently over 70 research projects underway thanks to Action Medical Research funding, building on our track record of life-changing medical research.
