My research focuses on influenza viruses. These airborne pathogens affect everyone but it is the very young and the very old that suffer more severe outcomes when infected. Although vaccines and antiviral drugs to prevent or treat influenza are available, it is essential that we use them well to avoid emergence of drug resistant viruses and to gain the maximum benefit for everyone.

We also carry out research to understand how pandemic influenza arises every few decades as these outbreaks are more severe than the seasonal influenza we see every winter. We aim to understand which viruses in nature pose the biggest threat and to ascertain that our current antiviral and vaccination strategies can work against them.
