Alfie is severely physically disabled by quadriplegic cerebral palsy. As his mum Sam explains, a holiday in the sun is neither simple nor stress-free. But – accompanied by seven extra suitcases for Alfie’s medication and equipment – the whole family had a wonderful week away.
Lanzarote was brilliant, well worth the Internet searching for accessible villas and pool hoists with equipment hire availability like the (hospital style) profiling bed and hoist. We also need special assistance at airports, an ‘ambulift’ to get Alfie on the plane from his wheelchair, airport transfers that are adapted for wheelchairs and checking the local terrain for accessibility with a wheelchair... the list goes on, and that's without the care, the packing of all the medical equipment and Alfie’s medications. We needed seven cases for one 11 year old child. I'm afraid that sitting with a glass of wine and the laptop clicking on an all-inclusive holiday with the family is no longer an enjoyable or easy task. There’s lots of stress, worry, cost and planning. But a whole week away with all of the family together in the warm sun... it was beautiful.
