I love how fundraising brings everyone together

Pub landlord turned estate agent John O’Neill (pictured) is no stranger to organising community events. Now a Branch Partner for Cubitt & West’s Western Road branch in Brighton, John enjoys coordinating fundraising events and in the last year alone has helped to raise £3,000 for Action Medical Research.

In this guest blog, John tells us more about his motivation:

In my previous job, I hosted many charity events for local and larger charities, where the whole community got involved. This is something I thoroughly enjoyed; it’s a great way to bring staff, customers and the general public together, not to mention great fun!

When I started at Cubitt & West, I was excited to head up a team to raise money for Action Medical Research as well as our local hospice here in Brighton.

We have held quiz nights, cake stalls and cabarets and taken part in various sporting events, with our most successful event being last year’s Autumn Ball where our total raised for Action Medical Research was just short of £3,000.

For this year’s Comedy Gala Evening on Saturday, 10 September, we are pulling out all the stops! We are going upmarket to the iconic Grand Brighton for a night of laughs, a delicious three-course dinner and dancing and we’ve already sold 170 seats.

We have built up regular attendees to our events with the majority being staff, friends and family. The key to success is to keep the price competitive and ensure the event theme will be popular.

I love how fundraising brings people together. From a staff point of view, we all pull together as a team and really want to make the event a success. From a competitive point of view, we did raise the most in the company last year, which we aim to repeat this year!

When you see the joy that our efforts bring the charity, it makes all the hard work worthwhile. We normally finish the year off in December with a Christmas quiz, a fun-filled event where we generally raise about £300 for Action.

In July, we had the Cycle Round the World bike challenge, which saw all branches play their part in cycling the 30,751km ‘around the world’ on static bikes, in our office which also helped generate funds. We were aiming to raise a minimum of £3,000 this year though we're hoping to smash this target!
