Derbyshire man smashes fundraising goal for London-Paris charity bike ride

Hours before Geraint Thomas cycled through Paris en route to his first ever Tour de France win, Ashbourne resident Jeremy Bacon was finishing his own French challenge.

The 52-year-old cycled along the Champs Élysées on Saturday 28 July along with fifty other riders to complete a 351 mile journey that started four days earlier in London.

“It was a fantastic feeling” says Jeremy. “The hot weather was particularly harsh at times, but the camaraderie of all the cyclists and the event organisers made it a really enjoyable experience!”

Jeremy took on the cycling challenge for children’s charity Action Medical Research along with around fifty other riders including his wife Vicky and close friend Andy Jennings.

The CEO of The Sherwood Group - a Nottinghamshire-based greeting card print and packaging company – set himself a target of £1,700 but has so far managed to raise more than £2,300. (https://www.action.org.uk/sponsor/L2P2018Jeremy).

Action’s Head of Events Emma Morgan accompanied the cyclists on their ride and says she was impressed with everyone’s dedication: “This was our 19th London-Paris ride and I don’t think we’ve ever seen such extreme conditions; temperatures exceeded 42C at some points but all the riders remained positive throughout.

“I’d like to thank Jeremy for his continued support and to congratulate him, his wife and their friend Andy for helping to raise both funds and awareness for Action Medical Research.”

So far the collective total raised by the riders on this year’s London to Paris bike ride exceeds £100,000 with donations still coming in.

Anyone wanting to participate in the 20th Action London-Paris bike ride in 2019 can find out more here.

The charity is currently funding research into areas including premature birth, epilepsy, asthma, scarlet fever, cerebral palsy, brain cancer and some rare and distressing conditions.
