Necrotising Enterocolitis

“The worst thing was not knowing and being told there was no specific test that would confirm what Joshua had.”
Kirsty, Joshua’s mum

Joshua was born 15 weeks prematurely. Just seven days later, he became critically ill with what his doctors suspected was necrotising enterocolitis (NEC). Diagnosis was only confirmed after Joshua underwent surgery to remove the area of his gut damaged by the disease. Thankfully Joshua survived, but we want to prevent other babies from suffering like Joshua. And with your help, we hope we can.

Action Medical Research is currently funding research led by Dr Andrew Ewer, which aims to develop a sensor to detect NEC at a much earlier stage in the disease. This could ultimately reduce the number of babies suffering long-term health problems as well as the number of babies who sadly die.
