Aberdeen ladies lunch raises £8,500 for local children’s charity

25 March 2014

Over 300 ladies attended the annual fundraising lunch for Action Medical Research on Thursday 13 March and raised £8,500 for the charity. The ladies enjoyed an afternoon of fine dining at The Marcliffe and Spa Hotel, and received a traditional welcome from piper, Norman Fiddes.

The speaker was Professor Pamela Enderby MBE who had the ladies in stiches with her very humorous delivery on how best to communicate effectively with the opposite sex. Her subject was ‘Men speak, women talk so how the devil do we both communicate!’

Pam hails from Sheffield and is Head of and Dean of The Faculty of Medicine at Sheffield University. She has had a long and distinguished career, being the principal investigator on 50 research projects, spanning three decades. Pam has also written 14 books and published more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles.

After 16 years of organising this event at the beautiful Marcliffe Hotel, the Chair, Sue Harker and her committee, said a sad farewell to Stuart Spence and his staff, thanking them for all their support and wishing them all the best for the future.

Next year the lunch will take place on Friday 20 March in the Ardoe House with guest speaker Lady Annabelle Goldie, Baroness of Bishopton, MSP and former Scottish Conservative Party Leader.  This is likely to be a very popular event.

The ladies who attended the lunch raised money to help sick and disabled babies and children. Medical research can save and change children’s lives. Yet surprisingly, medical research into conditions that devastate children’s lives is poorly funded.  The charity is currently supporting work in Scotland around stillbirth, autism, breathing difficulties, cataracts asthma.
