Action welcomes Government's new maternity strategy

30 November 2017

As a charity committed to funding research into pregnancy complications, premature birth and potentially deadly conditions that can affect tiny, vulnerable babies, we welcome the announcement that the government will aim to reduce the rate of preterm birth from eight per cent to six per cent by 2025. Premature birth affects around 61,000 babies in the UK each year and, sadly, is the biggest killer of babies in the UK.

Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt has also announced that he will be looking into enabling coroners to investigate full-term stillbirths to help give parents answers and resolution when something goes wrong.

Julie Buckler, Action Medical Research Chief Executive says: “We welcome the new maternity strategy as announced by Government. Saving tiny lives lies at the very heart of our work funding top quality medical research to help families affected by baby loss, injury around the time of their baby’s birth and preterm birth.”
