Birthday fundraiser reaches new heights

19 November 2007

Art Bates, from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, will celebrate his 73rd birthday in exhilarating style – by skydiving from 10,000 feet in aid of the charity Action Medical Research.

Daredevil Art and his wife Esther, 65, will both be taking part in the fundraising leap at the North London Parachute Centre, Chatteris Airfield, on Saturday November 24th, the day before Art’s special day. This will be the couple’s second fundraising adventure for the charity, having already completed a 100km trek across the glaciers of Iceland in June.

Art, a former communications engineer, said: “Action Medical Research funds vital research into a wide range of diseases and conditions, affecting young and old, which I think is brilliant, especially the work around hip replacement surgery, which I can relate to having myself had two knee replacements. “This year I’ve decided to celebrate my birthday in style. I’ve had surprise dinners and cakes made to look like computers. I’ve spent some on my own, my 21st on guard duty, some with just family and some with friends.

This year I am going to do a skydive for charity, so don’t send me any cards or presents, just send me lots of sponsorship money!”
