Charity cyclists to tackle new route from Blackheath to Paris
A group of 30 elite cyclists will set out from Blackheath on Wednesday, 9 September, as part of a brand new London to Paris ride to raise money for children’s charity Action Medical Research.
With its iconic London to Paris bike ride each July already a confirmed success, the charity has launched the end-of-season tour for 2015 with a fresh route to tempt tour aficionados and novices alike.
On the first 85-mile leg, riders will pass through south-east London, including Welling and Dartford, before skirting Maidstone and Ashford and crossing the rolling fields of the Kent countryside towards Dover to take the ferry to Dunkirk.
Once in France the group will take in the picturesque French towns of Cambrai and Soissons while cycling to the heart of Paris to complete the tour under the arches of the Eiffel Tower on Saturday, 12 September.
Cyclists participating in the new 328-mile ride are raising money to fund medical research to help save and change the lives of sick and disabled babies and children. With the help of its supporters, Action Medical Research has played a significant role in many medical breakthroughs for more than 60 years, from the development of the first UK polio vaccines to the use of ultrasound in pregnancy – helping to save thousands of children’s lives and change many more.
Action Medical Research is currently funding research into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
Cyclists who took part in the charity’s 15th London to Paris ride in July are set to collect more than £360,000 and entry is open for Action Medical Research’s 2016 ride, which will take place from 20 July to 24 July.
