Children and Paddington enjoy charity’s Family Fun Day

20 August 2013

Paddington Bear was guest of honour at a new Family Fun Day held at the Cambridge Belfry in Cambourne on Sunday (18 August). The event raised vital funds and awareness for children’s charity Action Medical Research.

The sun shone brightly as families enjoyed bouncy castles, games, golf, a funfair, stalls and live music from Chasing Storms and Paddy Hynes, all held in the hotel grounds and lakeside. Paddington, who is the charity’s furry fundraising mascot, came along to join in the fun and judge the colouring competition! More than £720 has been raised so far, with money still coming in.

Lucy Hynes, Community Fundraising Manager for Action Medical Research, said: “It was lovely to see so many families enjoying themselves and we hope this will become an annual event. Thank you so much to the Cambridge Belfry for offering use of the venue and grounds to support the charity, and all the stallholders who came along and donated raffle prizes.

“As well as the money raised, the day was a fantastic opportunity to highlight the work of Action Medical Research in Cambridge. We have big plans for future fundraising in the area and hope local people will want to get more involved. Committed volunteers are at the heart of what we do and we are always looking for new recruits to help.”

Action Medical Research has just celebrated 60 years of funding medical breakthroughs to help sick and disabled babies and children. The charity is currently funding a number of research projects in Cambridge, including work based at the University of Cambridge, Addenbrookes Hospital and The Rosie Hospital. This includes: research to investigate how bacterial infection and changes in a mother’s immune system may be linked to an increased risk of premature birth; improving seizure detection in newborn babies with epilepsy; and investigating the causes of stillbirth.
