Children’s charity calling riders for the Scott Mountain Bike Marathon Series 2014
Children’s charity Action Medical Research is the charity partner for this year’s Scott Mountain Bike Marathon Series. The charity is calling on all keen mountain bikers to take Action and use their passion for off-road cycling to raise money to help fund medical research into conditions affecting sick and disabled babies and children.
The Scott Mountain Bike Marathon Series is widely regarded as being the original single loop off road mountain bike event in the UK. With a 14 year history and offering full support, the established event gives riders the opportunity to experience the big mountain wilds whilst they tackle a 50km or 75km route (approximate distance). There is also a Monster Marathon of 100km plus available at the Drumlanrig Castle challenge. The events are open to over 12s, making the weekends perfect for the whole family to enjoy.
Events are taking place at:
Bullith Wells Spring, Powys, Wales on 12 and 13 April 2014
Rhayader, Powys, Wales on 25 May 2014
Church Streeton, Shropshire, England on 29 June 2014
Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland on 3 August 2014
Ruthin, Denbighshire, Wales on 13 and 14 September 2014
David Graham, Head of Community and Events Fundraising, said: “We are really pleased to be able to offer something new and challenging to our portfolio of cycling events. Action is renowned for its cycling events and this one will not disappoint. We know that the mountain bikers out there are going to get a massive sense of achievement from completing a 50km or the Monster Marathon at Drumlanrig Castle.”
Each event offers free camping from the Friday night until the Monday morning, showers, toilets, onsite caterers, Saturday evening entertainment, licensed bar, pasta meal – and all that’s before entrants even start the ride! Free feed stations for fuelling with Torq natural energy will be dotted along the route with mechanics, medics and marshals to keep bikers on the trail.
Cyclists participating in the Mountain Bike Marathon Series will be raising money to help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. Medical research can save and change children’s lives. Yet surprisingly, medical research into conditions that devastate children’s lives is poorly funded. Action Medical Research has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952. The charity is currently supporting work around stillbirth, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy and brain cancer, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
An early bird booking fee is currently available for £30, with entrants then fundraising an extra £35. There is also a sportive option where cyclists pay £65 to enter, with no further fundraising required.
