Children’s charity hosts Glasgow ladies’ lunch fundraiser
Children’s charity Action Medical Research will be holding its annual Ladies’ Lunch at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow on Friday 4 November.
The popular lunch event usually attracts around 300 ladies for an afternoon of fun, fundraising and fine dining. This year’s event will include entertainment from comedienne Karen Dunbar and tribute band Take That 2, as well as an auction and raffle with some fantastic prizes.
Action Medical Research funds vital work to benefit sick babies and children and has over the last 30 years invested over £6 million in more than 70 projects based in Scotland.
Work currently being funded by the charity includes the development of a potential new vaccine against a bacterium which can cause meningitis and pneumonia involving a team from Glasgow Biomedical Research Centre. Meanwhile, in Edinburgh the charity is supporting research into Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that causes severe disability, and the development of a new computer system to diagnose visual field defects in children.
Janet Balcombe, from Action Medical Research Scotland, says: “The Glasgow Ladies’ Lunch has been a firm fixture on our calendar for very many years now and is always one of our biggest fundraising events. Many people come back year after year and it’s thanks to such loyal support that the charity is able to fund vital medical research projects here in Scotland.”
Action Medical research celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2012 and has a proud heritage of supporting medical breakthroughs in Scotland. This has included funding some of the work of Professor Ian Donald, the pioneer of ultrasound scanning in pregnancy, developing the Glasgow Coma scale used to assess consciousness after head injury and helping fund the Duncan Guthrie Institute of Medical Genetics in Glasgow, the first of its kind in Europe.
