Children’s charity seeks volunteers “We know your time is precious - to us it is priceless”

25 May 2012

June 1 to 7 is Volunteers’ Week and children’s charity Action Medical Research is looking for volunteers who can spare a few hours to support the charity’s vital work which helps sick babies and children.

Every year the charity runs a packed programme of challenge events including bike rides, running events and overnight endurance walks.

All of these activities rely heavily on a dedicated crew of staff and volunteers to make them a success.

Volunteer crew members are fully supported, briefed and advised on all aspects of their duties, which could include registering teams, marshalling or manning refreshment stops.

Volunteering for Action Medical Research was passed on to Adam Cochrane,40, a software developer from East Lothian by his mum when she stepped back after having volunteered for over 20 years.

Adam says: “I was very pleased when my mother nominated me to take her work with Action Medical Research. Between my mother and I. we have over 35 years of wisdom to prove that they are a great charity to get involved with, whatever you enjoy cycling and running or lunches and garden parties . If you thought volunteering for charities was a world of ladies coffee mornings and lunches, you could not be further from the truth!” So come join us at Action Medical Research if you can spare the time, you won’t regret it.”

David Graham, Head of Community Fundraising, says: “We need people from all walks of life to help with a vast array of events and activities throughout the UK. We want to speak to people with a passion for admin, lovers of marketing and promotions, anyone who was born to organise, and loves being in the great outdoors. We promise you a most rewarding use of your spare time and tremendous amounts of fun!”

This year Action Medical Research celebrates 60 years of vital research.
Money raised by the charity helps fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. The charity is currently supporting work around meningitis, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, premature birth and some very rare conditions that severely affect children.

If you can spare a few hours of your time to lend a hand then Action Medical Research would love to hear from you. For more information or just to have a chat about how you can help make a difference for sick babies and children visit www.action.org.uk or email Nicky Clarke at nclarke@action.org.uk.

Volunteers’ Week is an annual event which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK. Over 22 million people are involved in volunteering in the UK every year.

Action Medical Research - the leading UK-wide medical research charity dedicated to helping babies and children - is celebrating 60 years of vital research in 2012. We’ve been funding medical breakthroughs since we began in 1952 and have spent more than £100 million on research that has helped save thousands of children’s lives and changed many more. Today, we continue to find and fund the very best medical research to help stop the suffering of babies and children caused by disease and disability. We want to make a difference in:

• tackling premature birth and treating sick and vulnerable babies
• helping children affected by disability, disabling conditions and infections
• targeting rare diseases that together severely affect many forgotten children.

But there is still so much more to do. Make 2012 a special year and help fund more life-changing research for some of the UK’s sickest babies and children.
