Crime novelist Peter James presents charity cheque
Brighton-born Peter James, one of the UK’s most treasured crime and thriller novelists, today presented a cheque to children’s charity Action Medical Research.
The cheque for £11,000 was funds raised by The Peter James Golf Classic event, held 12 September at Haywards Heath Golf Club. Thirty two, four-ball teams took part in the charity competition and Peter James was on hand to autograph his latest best seller, Not Dead Yet.
Peter James’ Roy Grace detective novels have sold over five million in the UK alone and 13 million worldwide in total. The series is now translated into 35 languages.
The Peter James Golf Classic is organised by Action Medical Research’s Haywards Heath and Lindfield Committee's Golf Sub-Committee – headed by Bob Sansom, assisted by Peter Milton and Alan Mower. It has been running for four years and has raised in total £41,000 for the charity.
Money raised will help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. Action Medical Research has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952. The charity is currently supporting work around Down syndrome, epilepsy, sickle cell disease, and diabetes, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
Peter James said: “I am delighted to present this cheque to Action Medical Research. I have been aware of the charity for many years, including their pioneering work contributing to the development of the first polio vaccine.”
“I have a big interest in medicine, often writing about medical themes - particularly in my recent book Perfect People. It’s wonderful to help make a difference on behalf of Action Medical Research who fund research to make sure babies and children feel the real benefits of medicine.”
Sarah Moss, Director of Communications, was on hand to accept the cheque at the charity’s headquarters in Horsham, Thursday 10 January 2013. She said: “We are really grateful for the support of Peter James and all those taking part in The Golf Classic event. It's a fun day, with excellent prizes and the chance to meet a treasured novelist as well as raising vital funds to help sick babies and children. Please support us in 2013.”
The 2013 Peter James Golf Classic will be held Wednesday 11 September, once again at Haywards Heath Golf Club. Action Medical Research is calling for sponsors, teams and prizes to make it an even bigger success this year. Anyone able to help in any of these ways should contact Bob Sansom on 01444 412190.
