Dad gets set to run Great North Run in Paddington Bear costume

8 September 2016

A father from Hull is getting ready to run in a Paddington BearTM suit when he competes in the Great North Run for the sixth time in memory of his son Daniel.

Charlie Paterson, 45, will don the costume for the 13.1-mile race in Newcastle upon Tyne on Sunday, 11 September, to raise funds for Action Medical Research, PaddingtonTM’s favourite UK charity.

This will be his sixth Great North Run – past outfits have included an 8ft beer bottle and Darth Vader – and Charlie also completed the 2012 London Marathon in aid of the UK children’s charity.

For more than 60 years Action Medical Research has helped pioneer treatments and ways to prevent disease that have benefited millions of people in the UK and across the world. Research they’ve funded has helped to beat polio in the UK, develop ultrasound in pregnancy, fight meningitis and prevent stillbirths.

Action Medical Research is currently funding research into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.

Charlie, of Park Avenue West, was inspired to support the charity after his son Daniel was born 16 weeks early in 2007.

“I am running the Great North Run in memory of my son Daniel who was born at 24 weeks in February 2007 and sadly died 10 days later,” he says.

“Action Medical Research is offering hope to the many thousands of families who are dealing with the trauma of a baby born too early, striving to support a child affected by disability, or facing the challenge of caring for a child with a rare and devastating disease for which there is no cure.

“I hope people can find it in their hearts to help me reach my target. Just one breakthrough, however small, can mean the world.”
