Davina McCall returns for Action DIVA Sussex charity bike ride

14 May 2013

Davina McCall pledged to do it all again next year after joining more than 300 women for the Action DIVA Sussex bike ride to raise funds for children’s charity Action Medical Research on Saturday (11 May).

The TV host and mum-of-three was up bright and early to set riders off in her inimitable bubbly style from the East Sussex National, near Uckfield, before joining them out on the road herself.

Despite having a heavy cold, Davina successfully tackled the 100km ‘champion’ route, the longest of a choice of three. She and her fellow riders braved blustery conditions as they pedalled through beautiful rural Sussex, with cyclists of all abilities taking part.

After the ride Davina said: "The Action DIVA ride was such an amazing day out in saddle for me and hundreds of lovely ladies, raising funds for my favourite charity Action Medical Research. The Sussex country lanes were pretty hilly and the headwind was crazy! But everyone stuck together and crossed the finish line, and I am so proud of every woman who did the ride! There was such a fab feeling of female solidarity – well done the girls! Can’t wait for next year, why don't you come join us?'

The ride was supported by bike brand Trek and is expected to raise around £45,000 to help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children.

This is the third year Davina has cycled to raise funds for Action Medical Research, a charity she has supported since she was a little girl. She says: “Having kids and being a mum means supporting Action Medical Research has such great meaning to me because of all of the great work it funds to help children. Research is so important, and great leaps are being made – just one breakthrough, however small, can mean the world.”

Event manager Sarah Stevenson from Action Medical Research said: “We all had such a great day. All the women enjoyed a challenging and beautiful route and received a lovely goody bag and medal as they crossed the finish line. We like to spoil our riders with good food and a free massage too. Roll on 2014 when we hope to keep the route and venue the same and attract even more fabulous ladies on bikes!”

The Action DIVA Sussex will return in May 2014 and is part of the Action DIVA series of women’s cycling events. For more information visit www.action.org.uk/diva-rides
