Davina urges ladies to saddle up for Action DIVA bike rides

LETTER TO EDITORS FROM DAVINA MCCALL

14 February 2013

Dear Editor,

Readers may be used to seeing me on the telly but I can also regularly be spotted on my bike. Yes, believe it or not, I’m a dedicated convert to road cycling and I’m passionate about encouraging more women to take to the saddle.

Riding for charity has been a great motivator for me. I find it so rewarding and this will be my third year cycling for children’s charity Action Medical Research.

This charity is very close to my heart and is currently looking for ladies to join its popular Action DIVA series in May.

I will be saddling up for the Action DIVA Sussex on Saturday 11 May, setting out from the East Sussex National Golf Club near Uckfield, but rides are also taking place in Warwickshire and Scotland on Sunday 19 May.

I would like to encourage your female readers – whether they are already regular riders or newbies looking for that first challenge – to consider taking part.

I’ve been involved with Action Medical Research since I was a little girl, as my grandparents supported them. This wonderful charity funds research into many diseases and conditions that affect babies and children in the UK.

The Action DIVA rides are aimed at all abilities and each offers a choice of three circular routes ranging from 17 to 66 miles long. Enjoying a great day out is key so rest assured you will be well looked after every inch of the way! Mechanics are on hand to help with any technical difficulties and volunteers welcome you at well-stocked rest stops where you can refuel.

So why not grab a group of girlie mates and join the friendly group? Every mile pedalled will help sick babies and children.

Yours faithfully,

Davina McCall,
London

Action Medical Research is the leading UK-wide medical research charity dedicated to helping babies and children. We’ve been funding medical breakthroughs since we began in 1952 and have funded research that has helped save thousands of children’s lives and changed many more. Today, we continue to find and fund the very best medical research to help stop the suffering of babies and children caused by disease and disability. We want to make a difference in:

  • tackling premature birth and treating sick and vulnerable babies
  • helping children affected by disability, disabling conditions and infections
  • targeting rare diseases that together severely affect many forgotten children.

But there is still so much more to do. Please help us fund more life-changing research for some of the UK’s sickest babies and children.

Action Medical Research has more than 30 years experience in organising successful bike rides. Routes are monitored and clearly signposted. Snack and lunch stops are provided and medical and mechanical staff are on hand at all times.

The Action DIVA series is supported by Trek Bicycle, a global leader in the design and manufacture of bicycles and related products. Trek believes the bicycle can be a simple solution to many of the world’s most complex problems, and is committed to breaking down the barriers that prevent people from using bicycles more often for transportation, recreation, and inspiration.
