Dermot turns City Trader for Action Medical Research

3 October 2014

Sky News presenter, Dermot Murnaghan has been responsible for breaking the biggest news stories from all over the World. Most recently however he took time out of his busy schedule to try his hand at trading the markets for two charities including Action Medical Research. He is the latest big name to take part in Celebrity Trader, an online financial trading challenge for City Index which sees a different celebrity each month trying to make as much profit as possible for the charity of their choice.

Throughout Dermot’s career, he has presented financial news, but has this provided him with enough knowledge for the job?  Dermot’s aim is to raise money for children’s charity Action Medical Research. Money raised will help to fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. The charity is currently supporting work around prematurity, stillbirth, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy and brain cancer, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.

Dermot believes his experience presenting the news can help him in his trading. His strategy is to stay informed by watching key events and other things that are currently being under-reported in the world.

The experienced newscaster isn’t the first journalistic star to enter Celebrity Trader. His Sky News colleague Adam Boulton participated, earning £4,673.86 after starting with an initial balance of £2,500. Murnaghan hasn’t reached that total yet, but so far, he has raised just over £3,700 - with a £1,200 profit to date for his two chosen charities. He traded on the Foreign Exchange markets, earning £750 on the Pound against the US Dollar. He also traded £500 on the Australian Dollar against the US Dollar, but he still has time on his side to beat Boulton. Dermot began trading on 10 September and his page will be live until 10 October 2014.
