Story info: Over 170 cyclists will set off from London’s Blackheath and pass through Kent on Wednesday afternoon (23 July) on a 300-mile London to Paris bike ride for children’s charity Action Medical Research.
The event finishes in Paris on Saturday with the cyclists riding in convoy down the Champs Élysées to the Eiffel Tower the day before the Tour de France race finishes along the same streets.
The riders, who will have cycled 85 miles through the Kent countryside, will arrive in Dover at the end of their first day to catch the ferry to Calais.
Cyclists participating in the annual ride will be raising money to fund medical research to help save and change the lives of sick and disabled babies, children and young people. With the help of its supporters, Action has played a significant role in many medical breakthroughs for over 60 years, starting with the development of the first UK polio vaccines.
The charity is currently supporting work around stillbirth, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy and brain cancer, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
Some of the cyclists are taking part for very personal reasons – because their family has experienced the effects of a serious medical condition, to remember a lost baby or child, or to help others by raising funds for medical research to help babies and children. Some are devotees of the event who come back year after year and some are first-timers looking for a new challenge.
The cyclists will generally be enjoying the quieter roads of the beautiful Kent countryside, but will also pass through Dartford, West Malling and round the outskirts of Maidstone.
The charity is already recruiting riders for its next London to Paris ride in 2015. There will be two four-day routes to choose from and a 24-hour challenge. For more information visit http://www.action.org.uk/L2P2015
