It takes two minutes to save lives

18 September 2006
The Chief Executive of national charity, Action Medical Research, is today calling on the Public to support an online petition that highlights the lack of Government funding into research to stop babies from being born prematurely. In his letter to the Editors of the UK’s National Press Simon Moore asks that the Public shows its support by taking just two minutes to sign the online petition www.standupfortinylives.org Mr Moore says, “Very premature babies are extremely vulnerable, around 1,500 die every year, and many others go on to have serious lifelong health problems, learning difficulties or disability. “Doctors still don’t fully understand why some babies are born too early and there are no effective treatments to prevent premature labour. “By signing the petition readers will be calling on the Government to double its funding to specialist research teams. “At the current time we estimate that just £6 of Government research money is spent, for each baby born, on finding ways to stop premature labour.” The petition, which is due to close at the end of the year, has already gained significant Public support with signatories rapidly forwarding it onto their friends and family. High profile supporters of the petition include Jo Brand, Davina McCall, Harry Hill, Frank Skinner, Graham Norton, Les Dennis, Arabella Weir, John Moloney, Tony Hadley and Nell McAndrew.
