Join the girls for Action DIVA Scotland ride

12 February 2013

Children’s charity Action Medical Research is looking for ladies to sign up for the second Action DIVA Scotland bike ride this spring.

Last year’s inaugural event saw 200 women taking to the beautiful, quiet country lanes of the Kingdom of Fife. This year’s ride, on Sunday 19 May, offers a choice of three circular routes to suit all fitness levels – from a Cool 19 miles, to a Classic 35 miles up to a Champion 66 miles.

The routes take in some of the best scenery that is unique to Scotland, with highlights including the ancient burgh of Culross, with its period houses that line the partially cobbled streets, and breathtaking views of Loch Leven.

Cyclists participating in Action DIVA Scotland will raise money to help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. Action Medical Research is also currently supporting work around Down syndrome, epilepsy, sickle cell disease, and diabetes, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.

In Scotland the charity is currently funding three research projects based in Edinburgh. These are looking at visual field defects in children, pregnancy complications and preterm labour.

Janet Balcombe, event organiser from Action Medical Research, says: “This event is suitable for all abilities so we’d like all you lovely lasses out there to dust off your bikes and join us for a great day out – even if you haven’t sat on a bike for years! We hope lots of ladies will take part. Every mile pedalled will help sick babies and children.”

The ride, supported by leading bike brand Trek, includes plenty of rest stops and a fully-serviced lunch. Staff riders and first aiders will also be on hand.

Entry costs £28 and participants also need to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship.

The Scottish ride is part of the Action DIVA series, with sister events taking place in Sussex on 11 May and in Warwickshire on 19 May.

Action Medical Research is the leading UK-wide medical research charity dedicated to helping babies and children. We’ve been funding medical breakthroughs since we began in 1952 and have funded research that has helped save thousands of children’s lives and changed many more. Today, we continue to find and fund the very best medical research to help stop the suffering of babies and children caused by disease and disability. We want to make a difference in:

• tackling premature birth and treating sick and vulnerable babies
• helping children affected by disability, disabling conditions and infections
• targeting rare diseases that together severely affect many forgotten children.

But there is still so much more to do. Please help us fund more life-changing research for some of the UK’s sickest babies and children.

Action Medical Research has more than 30 years experience in organising successful bike rides. Routes are monitored and clearly signposted. Snack and lunch stops are provided and medical and mechanical staff are on hand at all times.

The Action DIVA series is supported by Trek Bicycle, a global leader in the design and manufacture of bicycles and related products. Trek believes the bicycle can be a simple solution to many of the world’s most complex problems, and is committed to breaking down the barriers that prevent people from using bicycles more often for transportation, recreation, and inspiration.
