Paddington Bear and Ken Livingstone MP are to launch Action Research’s first campaign of the millennium - Touching Lives.
The world’s most famous bear wants to remind every man, woman and child why the work of the leading medical charity is so important and how they can help.
Action Research can genuinely claim to have touched the life of every single person in the UK. Through vital research into the polio and rubella vaccines, hip replacement and ultrasound, the charity has been at the forefront of many important medical advances.
Now, the Touching Lives campaign aims to raise £1.5 million for vital medical research to benefit children and families across the UK. The charity’s current projects include work investigating the causes of premature birth, meningitis, sickle cell disease, epilepsy and osteoporosis - conditions which currently devastate the lives of thousands of children and their families every year.
Mr Livingstone said: “Action Research is funding around 160 medical research projects in the capital and across the UK, all with the sole objective of overcoming disease and disability. The Touching Lives campaign deserves maximum support from everyone in the UK and will enable Action Research to continue to touch the lives of you, me and the person in the street through the funding of vital medical research.”
After the London launch, Paddington will be taking the ‘Touching Lives’ message to 11 cities around the UK in his own Bear-mobile.
The ‘Touching Lives’ campaign follows on from Action Research’s 1999 campaign “Paddington’s Suitcase Challenge”, which raised over £1 million for medical research into children’s diseases and conditions.
The Touching Lives campaign will consist of special events and activities all over the UK - teddy bear picnics, bike rides, sponsored events, treasure hunts, coffee mornings, jumble sales and all manner of wild and wacky fundraising fun.
Action Research would like to thank Toyota for the generous loan of the Bear-mobile and Royal & Sun Alliance for providing the fuel for Paddington’s UK launch journey. Also Paddington & Co for their on going support. Not forgetting Duerrs Marmalade for providing Paddington with his favourite food!
