Last call for riders for Essex100 charity cycle challenge

18 July 2014

Cycling challenge the Essex100 is taking place on Sunday 31 August 2014 and children’s charity Action Medical Research is calling for riders to sign up now for the event. For a limited time there is 20% off the cost of the ride.

There is a choice of Cool (33 miles), Classic (63 miles) and Champion (100 miles) routes setting out from Essex County Cricket Club, Chelmsford.

The Essex100 charity cycle ride is one of our most popular rides attracting over 700 riders.  Cyclists can enjoy some excellent terrain as the ride journeys through quiet villages and the farmlands of north Essex, where the undulations will get cyclists in and out of the saddle.

Chris Chappell won a £1,800 Trek bike for being the highest fundraiser at last year’s Essex100. Chris says: “I had been contemplating signing up for a bike ride for some time just for fun. However, when I saw that the charity was Action Medical Research, I knew that I wanted to help as much as I could.

“My daughter Ava was born 10 weeks early in February 2013 and weighed a tiny 2lbs 7ozs. She spent over five weeks in the Broomfield neonatal unit and the care she received was amazing. Action Medical Research looks into ways to prevent premature birth and better ways to treat babies born too early.

The ride itself was enjoyable and extremely well organised. From the start, to the finish, to the signalling, the event could not be faulted. I’ll definitely be entering the next one! Some weeks after the event I received a pleasant phone call telling me I had won the bike. If that isn’t an incentive to enter I don’t know what is. Almost everyone knows of someone born prematurely, so if you are thinking of signing up for the Essex100, please sign up and get fundraising!”

This event is part of the charity’s popular RIDE100 series of one-day bike rides that take place in fantastic cycling locations across the UK. All include chip timing, food and water stations, lunch, marshals and mechanics.

Cyclists participating in the Essex100 will be raising money to help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. Action Medical Research has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952. The charity is currently supporting work around stillbirth, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy and brain cancer, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.

Places are limited so make sure you register soon. We are currently offering 20% off the ride fee. Use the code CRC at the checkout. For more information about the Essex100 ride and to register, visit the website: http://www.action.org.uk /100essex
