Last chance to join biggest London to Paris bike ride

15 March 2011

Children’s charity Action Medical Research will soon close registration for its popular London to Paris bike ride this summer and is offering any new riders a 25 per cent discount off the sign-up fee until the end of March.

Action Medical Research runs the biggest London to Paris event in the charity sector, with its riders arriving in the French capital the day before the finale of the Tour de France. More than 700 riders are expected to take part in this year’s event, riding on five different routes.

The newest route, introduced in 2010, sees the speediest cyclists completing a 300-mile route over three days, while the others tackle the distance in a slightly more leisurely four days. All five routes converge in Paris to ride in convoy down the Champs Elysees and finish at the Eiffel Tower the day before the professional cyclists – including the charity’s new cycling ambassador Geraint Thomas – head into the city.

Thomas, who wore the white jersey for best young rider in last year’s Tour de France, says: “I’m really looking forward to the challenges of this year’s Tour and you too could set yourself your own cycling challenge by taking on the London to Paris with Action Medical Research. This charity has a passion for cycling which is second to none. I would encourage all to get involved and take on something amazing. Who knows, maybe I’ll see you in Paris!”

Money raised by the ride will help fund vital medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. Research currently being supported by Action Medical Research includes work around meningitis, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and premature birth, as well as some very rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children. Last year’s event raised more than £1 million.

To receive 25 per cent discount from the £99 registration fee use the voucher code 25L2P2011 when prompted during the online registration process. To find out more about the ride and sign up visit the website

Action Medical Research runs the biggest London to Paris event in the charity sector. More than 3,000 cyclists have made the journey from London to Paris with Action Medical Research over the last decade. In the last ten years the event has raised more than £4.3 million, with 2010’s riders being the first to raise more than £1 million in a single year.

Action Medical Research is the leading UK-wide medical research charity dedicated to helping babies and children. We know that medical research can save and change children’s lives. For nearly 60 years we have been instrumental in significant medical breakthroughs, including the development of the UK polio vaccine and ultrasound scanning in pregnancy.

Today, we continue to find and fund the very best medical research to help stop the suffering of babies and children caused by disease and disability. We want to make a difference in:

•    tackling premature birth and treating sick and vulnerable babies
•    helping children affected by disability, disabling conditions and infections
•    targeting rare diseases that together severely affect many forgotten children.
