Local hero Davina McCall calls for more women to join her DIVA Sussex charity bike ride

25 March 2014

Fresh from her Sport Relief challenge, our charity Ambassador and local hero Davina McCall is calling for more women riders to join her Action DIVA Sussex cycle ride. Davina’s Action DIVA Sussex ride sets out from the East Sussex National Hotel and Golf Course on Sunday 11 May. Formerly only open to women, Davina’s Action DIVA now has a special limited number of places for men to enter.

Davina’s DIVA offers a Cool 21 mile route that is ideal if you’re new to cycling or looking for an early finish. The Classic 40 mile route is more challenging as is the Champion at 65 miles, ideal if you are a more experienced rider.

You'll ride out from the tranquil grounds of the East Sussex National Hotel on this bike ride and then quickly descend into the quiet lanes of the surrounding area.  Picturesque villages and stunning scenery are par for the course as you clock up the miles on any one of the three distances available.

David Graham, Head of Community and Events Fundraising, says: “We’ve all watched in awe as Davina pushed herself to the brink to complete her Sport Relief challenge. Now the people of Sussex have the chance to ride with one of the country’s most understated sportswomen. Davina always gives everything her all and we hope that more people sign up to experience her passion, enthusiasm and dedication.”

This is the fourth year Davina has fronted the DIVA rides for Action Medical Research, a charity she has supported since she was a child, and she hopes her involvement will inspire more women to take up cycling.

Davina says: “As a committed cyclist I can’t think of a better way to support my favourite charity and I want more people to get on their bikes and join us for this special event. It’s set in some of Sussex’s most stunning countryside and Action Medical Research provides great support on the day. There really is a route for everyone, regardless of your current fitness level, and it’s a fun day out for a fantastic cause, so come on, let’s give the boys a run for their money.”

Money raised by riders in the Davina’s Action DIVA Sussex will help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. The charity is currently supporting work around meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.

Mechanical support, first aiders and massage therapists will also be on hand.

There are two entry options. Participants can pay £30 and raise a minimum of £35 in sponsorship, or they can pay a flat fee of £55 with no further money to fundraise.
