McCalling all women to get on their bikes in 2011: TV star launches exciting new charity ride exclusively for women

12 January 2011

Davina McCall is asking women of all ages to get on their bikes and join her for a new all-female bike ride to raise vital funds for children’s charity Action Medical Research. The TV host will be fronting and riding in Davina’s DIVA100, setting out from Cowdray Park in Midhurst, Sussex, on Sunday 8 May.

Supported by Specialized, the event will offer a choice of two stunning countryside routes – the 100km challenge or a shorter 50km course for those looking to take it a little bit easier.

Currently presenting the new series of Got to Dance on SKY1 and The Biggest Loser on ITV1, Davina caught the cycling bug after doing Sport Relief’s John O’Groats to Land’s End ride last year and hopes the DIVA100 will inspire more women to get in the saddle.

She says: “I’ve become a cycling bore since then, but I love it with a passion. It’s an affordable, sociable way to keep fit and doesn’t have to be competitive. Although when Matthew and I go out together it always is!

“I’ve been involved with Action Medical Research since I was a child, but this is my first cycling event for the charity. I hope lots of ladies saddle up and join me for this new fundraiser. It’s going to be a fun day out and a great way to help such a special charity raise much-needed funds. Come on the girls!”

Cyclists participating in Davina’s DIVA100 will be raising money to help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. Research currently being supported by Action Medical Research includes work around meningitis, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and premature birth, as well as some very rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.

Event manager Sarah Stevenson from Action Medical Research says: “We already put on a range of popular cycling events each year, but the majority of participants are male. We decided to introduce a more female-friendly event to encourage new cyclists to join us. The DIVA100 will be a great day out with the girls and we’re thrilled that Davina will be leading it.”

A free training guide, supplied by the cycling experts at Specialized, is available to help prepare for the ride and the event is fully supported on the day with plenty of rest stops and a fully-serviced lunch. Staff riders, first aiders and massage therapists will also be on hand.

Anne Immelman, Specialized Marketing Manager said: “We are delighted to be associated with Davina’s DIVA100 and Action Medical Research. Our goal is to communicate our passion for cycling to women who may be looking for the next challenge or a good excuse to get back on a bike. Davina’s passion for the sport makes her the ideal ambassador for the sport and we are very excited at the prospect of riding alongside her and hundreds of female cyclists.”

Entry costs £28 and you will also need to raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship. Places are limited and this event is expected to be very popular so make sure you register soon. Sign up now and download your free training guide at
