Paddington hires Apprentice star for fundraising challenge
Paddington, the nation’s favourite bear, has hired me to undertake a very special task, one that’s far more important than anything I had to do on The Apprentice. He has asked me to help him make his annual Bring Your Bear fundraising event the biggest yet in 2009.
Bring Your Bear is aimed at schools and nurseries across the UK and raises vital funds for Paddington’s favourite charity, Action Medical Research. As the presenter of CBBC’s Beat the Boss programme, I know the simple ideas are often the best – and Bring Your Bear is very simple and easy to take part in. Schools choose a day in June, Paddington’s birthday month, and get each child to bring their teddy bear or favourite soft toy into class for the day in return for a £1 donation.
The money raised will go towards the charity’s Touching Tiny Lives appeal, which is helping doctors across the country to find better ways to protect mums-to-be from the risk of pregnancy complications, reduce the incidence of premature birth, and improve treatment for babies that need special care. As a new mum myself I appreciate just how important this work is. I can’t begin to comprehend the anxiety felt by those parents whose babies are born too early or sick.
Paddington has set a fundraising target of £200,000 and hopes children will use their imagination to help raise as much money as possible. There are additional sponsored challenges you can take part in, and he will provide every school and nursery that registers with a fantastic free fundraising pack, filled with ideas for activities, worksheets and his very own stickers. I’ll also be offering my own money-making tips!
I know the children will have lots of fun, so please join in and help us raise lots of money. I wasn’t scared of Sir Alan Sugar, but I’d hate to be fired by Paddington!

Action Medical Research is a leading, national medical research charity. For nearly 60 years we have been instrumental in significant medical breakthroughs including the development of the UK polio vaccine and ultrasound scanning in pregnancy. Our research helps babies and children affected by disease and disability. We are currently funding research into serious diseases and conditions, including meningitis, pneumonia, cerebral palsy, eczema and premature birth.
Our special appeal, Touching Tiny Lives, funds vital research to help the most vulnerable babies in this country. More research is needed to ensure that all babies, especially babies born prematurely, have the best possible start in life. To date this appeal has raised almost £4m to fund over 30 high-quality medical research projects into pregnancy complications and premature birth.
