Team run Bupa Great Women's 10k Glasgow for children’s charity
A team of seven women from Glasgow ran the city’s Bupa Great Women’s 10k in aid of Action Medical Research. Carole Grieve, her mum Carole Muir and two cousins Tracy McQueer and Amanda Hendry, as well as Cecilia Cooper, her daughter, Nicole and Tessa Gallacher all ran in the event on Sunday 11 May, raising £800 to help sick babies and children.
Carole Grieve ran the event because both she and her brother were born prematurely, eight weeks and 11 weeks respectively. Both were in critical condition after their births and needed specialist care. Carole has run for the charity in the past and also helps out with her mum at local Action events. Carole Muir got involved with the charity because her own children needed specialist care after their births and she wanted to help others in a similar situation.
Carole Grieve said: “The 10k went really well and we are delighted with the amount we raised – thanks to everyone who donated. I’m also really proud of my mum for completing the run in a personal best time – 1 hour 5 minutes.”
Cecilia Cooper is also Action Medical Research’s Community Fundraising Manager in Scotland. Cecilia said: “There was a brilliant atmosphere on the day and we received great support from people all along the route. It was fantastic to be amongst so many ladies running to support a variety of wonderful causes.”
Money raised by the team will help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. Action Medical Research has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952. The charity is currently supporting work around stillbirth, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy and brain cancer, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
