Yeovil firm names Action Medical Research as its charity of the year

8 February 2016

A thriving Yeovil company has named Action Medical Research as its charity of the year – and aims to raise £2,016 for the UK-wide children’s charity in 2016.

The Emporium, on Princes Street, which is made up of more than 60 independent retailers and artisans, will be running a series of fundraising events throughout the year, kicking off with The Emporium’s Charity of the Year Launch Lunch on Wednesday, 24 February, from midday until 2pm.

Owner Dawn Woodward says: “We have decided to support Action Medical Research this year as it is such a worthwhile cause. Having heard a presentation by our local fundraiser for Action, Jane Donnelly, I realised just what a difference this charity has made over the years to healthcare practices which we now take for granted.

“Each and every one of us has directly benefited from developments funded by this charity and to me that is an amazing achievement.

“We're hopeful that we'll be able to hit our target of £2,016 this year and have an exciting list of events that we'll be running at The Emporium to help raise funds.”

Tracey Edwards, Action Medical Research’s Community Fundraising Manager for the region, said the charity was delighted to have The Emporium’s support over the next 12 months.

“We’re so pleased they have chosen to make us its charity of the year for 2016,” she says. “Right now we have some of the best medical minds in the children’s hospitals and universities across the UK waiting to start research that could lead to the next life-changing treatments for babies and children. They just need the funding, so the support of companies like The Emporium makes a huge difference to our work.”

Action Medical Research has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952, including helping to introduce the first polio vaccines in the UK, developing the use of ultrasound in pregnancy and testing the rubella vaccine.

The children’s charity is currently funding research into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.
