The Barking Badgers return
That’s right — The Badgers are back to scale the dizzy heights of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in southern Spain, as they cycle routes designed for the pros of the elite cycling world on ‘La Vuelta del Tejón’ — Tour of the Badger, 17th — 21st May 2006.
We first saw the Barking Badgers race across the Italian Dolomites in 2005, raising £60,000 to fund research into the causes of premature labour. This year,The Badgers are hoping to smash that target and raise a further £70,000 to fund work into preventing blindness in premature babies. Without their support, this important research project may not have been funded at all.
The route of La Vuelta del Tejón is specifically designed to make the 70 members of The Badger Team sweat, with a 100-mile day, individual and team time trials, and over 450km of mountainous terrain to climb. Beginning to the west of Granada, the cyclists will cover daily distances of between 62km and 149km. The incredibly varied route takes in the Puerto la Ragua, a well known Vuelta de España climb, and heads for Trevélez, the highest village in Spain, before finally easing off and snaking to the finish on the shores of the Mediterranean sea.
Tim Mason is working very closely with Action Medical Research’s Challenge Events Department to design this outstanding team fundraising event, and The Barking Badgers are now in the midst of serious training. We wish them lots of luck with their new fundraising challenge!
