Action Medical Research Chair of Neuromuscular Genetics

University of Newcastle upon Tyne

Professor Kate Bushby holds the Action Medical Research Chair of Neuromuscular Genetics in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

“I have been working for more than 25 years on muscular dystrophies – rare inherited diseases that cause progressive muscle weakness and wasting,” says Professor Bushby. “My work is focussed on improving life for people with these diseases and other rare diseases.”

“People with rare diseases can face a lot of challenges. They often say it’s difficult to get a precise diagnosis and find someone who understands their problems. Treatments are seldom available.”

“The funding from Action Medical Research has enabled us to improve diagnosis of muscular dystrophy, identify what sort of care is best and collaborate with others, including patient organisations, internationally, with the ultimate aim of developing new treatments that improve people’s lives.”
