Keeping it safe and legal

We want your fundraising to be great fun but please ensure that whatever you and your helpers do is both safe and legal. Here are a few tips but make sure your
teachers /parent/guardians know what you are planning and don’t hesitate to call us if you need further advice.

Raffles

For small raffles that are part of a bigger event, you do not need a licence as long as you sell tickets at the event and have prizes drawn at the event (but no cash prizes). Tickets must not be sold by anyone under the age of 16.

Licences and insurance

You may need a licence or permit (or depending on your event, your school may already have arranged this). It is required for copyright and royalties for drama performances, music, sale of alcohol and charity collections in public places.

Action Medical Research cannot accept any responsibility for your event, nor anyone that participates in it. We strongly recommend that you have adequate insurance in place. Most venues and schools have Public Liability Insurance in place to cover events but please check that any liabilities to the public are covered.

Health and safety

Advice varies depending on the event you are planning. You must think about potential risks involved and how to prevent problems arising. Do you need a qualified first-aider present or is it enough to just have a first aid box? Do not obstruct fire escapes and make sure entrances are kept clear.  If you are using food in your fundraising make sure you follow basic hygiene and food preparation guidelines. When you are handling money make sure your money is kept in a safe place and that it is banked as soon as possible.
