Casino night raises £5,000 for Action Medical Research

20 May 2016

A packed casino night in Peterborough has raised £5,000 for UK-wide children’s charity Action Medical Research.

The event at the Peterborough Marriott Hotel on Friday, 4 March, was supported by GreenCity Solutions and Boongate Kia.

It was the latest in a string of fundraising events hosted by the Peterborough Committee for Action Medical Research, including a charity quiz in November with Shaun Wallace, star of ITV’s The Chase, and the 11th annual Tony Hadley Golf Classic in September, sponsored by Quai Administration Services, which raised £25,000.

“There are hundreds of thousands of children in the UK whose lives are devastated by disease and disability. It’s too many. Far too many. Research can put a stop to this, but Action Medical Research needs help which is why events like these are so important,” says committee chair Angela Hyde.

“The evening was a huge success and we're very grateful to everyone who attended as well as to our sponsors Tony O’Shea, of Boongate Kia, and Rob Baldacci, from Green City Solutions, for joining the fight for little lives.”

The committee (pictured above), which also hosts The Bear Club, an exclusive dining club which meets four times a year for lunch at the Peterborough Marriott Hotel, is now looking forward to the 12th annual Tony Hadley Golf Classic on 9 September at Elton Furze Golf Club.

For more than 60 years Action Medical Research has helped pioneer treatments and ways to prevent disease that have benefited millions of people in the UK and across the world. Research it’s funded has helped to beat polio in the UK, develop ultrasound in pregnancy, fight meningitis and prevent stillbirths.

The children’s charity is currently funding research into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.

Action Medical Research is a leading UK-wide charity working to save and change children’s lives through medical research. We believe that the diseases that devastate the lives of so many of our children can be beaten. We have been funding medical breakthroughs since we began in 1952 like the first polio vaccines in the UK, ultrasound in pregnancy and the rubella vaccine – helping to save thousands of children’s lives and change many more.

Just one breakthrough, however small, can mean the world.
