Children’s charity seeks new recruits in Volunteers’ Week

29 May 2013

June 1 to 7 is national Volunteers’ Week and children’s charity Action Medical Research is appealing for more people to get involved and help it to raise vital funds.

Every year the charity runs a packed programme of fundraising events to support its lifesaving work to help sick babies and children. Activities range from coffee mornings to gala dinners, bike rides to golf days, auctions to full-on choral and operatic concerts and much, much more. But all of these things rely on the efforts of loyal volunteers to make them happen.

You could join one of the charity’s existing groups or even start one of your own in your local area. You’ll need enthusiasm and willingness to muck in with a team – and if you have any special talents that could be useful then the charity is always keen to hear about them.

David Graham, Head of Community and Events Fundraising at Action Medical Research, says: “We need people to get involved now more than ever. Our committed volunteers are at the heart of what we do and we are always looking for new recruits to help with our ever-growing fundraising activities. There is so much you can do to join in – and have fun.

“Today in the UK, there are hundreds of thousands of sick and disabled children who need help. Research is the key to saving many of these children from a lifetime of suffering. We rely entirely on voluntary donations, so we cannot fund new medical breakthroughs without our dedicated fundraisers. If you think you could help in any way we would love to hear from you.”

The charity is currently supporting research into many conditions, including preventing early labour and developing treatments for babies affected by premature birth, helping children with disabilities and tackling rare diseases for which there are currently no cures.

Volunteers’ Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK – and it’s taking place from the 1-7 June 2013.
