Guestlist looks golden for high-profile charity cycling event

With less than one month to go, the guestlist is looking golden for the seventh annual Champions of CycleSport Dinner in aid of Action Medical Research.

Four-time Olympic gold medallist Laura Kenny OBE will be heading up the red carpet on Thursday, 24 November 2016, along with Jody Cundy MBE, fresh from his double gold victory in the Rio Paralympics.

Joining them at Battersea Evolution for the star-studded event will be 2012 Olympic champion Dani King MBE, fellow gold medal winner Steven Burke MBE and Team GB road cyclist Geraint Thomas MBE, who will be the guest of Protect Your Bubble.

The Champions of CycleSport Dinner, which is supported by Maserati and Garmin, will be opened by former rowing world champion and double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell OBE.

Peter Denton, Region Manager of Maserati North Europe, says: “The tireless work that Action Medical Research carries out is truly remarkable and we’re delighted to see the developments and advancements that their work is producing on a daily basis. It is testament to them that we have such a star-studded line up for this year’s Champions of Cyclesport Dinner. It will be a real privilege to see Laura Kenny, one of Great Britain’s most successful cyclists, at Battersea Evolution and Maserati are proud to be able to support Action Medical Research with this fantastic evening of fundraising.”

Gail Cook, UK & Ireland Marcomms Manager at Garmin, says: “We’re delighted to sponsor The Champions of CycleSport Dinner for another year. It’s a great event which pays homage to amazing athletes and raises money for a fantastic cause.”

Also attending will be Movistar's Alex Dowsett, JLT-Condor’s Russ Downing, mountain biking legend Martyn Ashton and Jack Bauer from Cannondale-Drapac. Darren Kenny OBE and Rochelle Gilmore, Team Manager for Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling, will be joined by Stephen Roche and Dean Downing as well as Scottish former professional road racing cyclist David Millar and Roger Hammond, Team Manager at Madison Genesis.

The event, which is also sponsored by BDOVELO, reflects Action Medical Research's passion for all things cycling: guests can mingle with some of the world's greatest cyclists while raising funds to help save and change the lives of sick and disabled babies and children.

Chris Grove, partner at BDO LLP, said: “BDOVELO is delighted to be able to support Action Medical Research and the excellent work they do by sponsoring this tremendous event for a third year.”

For more than 60 years Action Medical Research has helped pioneer treatments and ways to prevent disease that have benefited millions of people in the UK and across the world. Research they’ve funded has helped to beat polio in the UK, develop ultrasound in pregnancy, fight meningitis and prevent stillbirths.

The charity is currently funding research into meningitis, Down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.

Last year’s sold-out dinner raised almost £250,000 with unmissable auction prizes including a trip for two to Mallorca with Team Sky on their training camp in January. This year’s auction, which will be sponsored by Keepmoat, will include a signed painting of Chris Froome by Paul Oz as well as tickets to the Tour de France.

Tim Wray, Finance Director for Keepmoat Homes, says: “Keepmoat is thrilled to yet again support this event and to help raise money for Action Medical Research. It’s always a great event with a fantastic turnout in support of a great cause. We look forward to attending again and we wish everyone the best of luck in the auction!”
