‘King Kelly’ joins Champions of CycleSport Dinner line-up
Irish road racing legend Sean Kelly is the latest cycling star confirmed to attend this month’s Champions of CycleSport Dinner in aid of children’s charity Action Medical Research. A few tables are still available for the hot-ticket event, which is supported by online retailer Wiggle and will be held at London’s exclusive Hurlingham Club on 28 November.
Attended by some of the hottest names on two wheels, Kelly will be joined by a top-secret cycling megastar whose identity cannot be revealed until the night itself! Also on the guest list are Sir Dave Brailsford, Chris Boardman MBE, Jody Cundy MBE, Roger Hammond, Ross Edgar, Andy Tennant and rising star on the women’s racing scene, Hannah Barnes.
Sean Kelly was one of the most successful road cyclists of the 1980s and one of the finest classics riders of all time. From turning professional in 1977 until his retirement in 1994, he won nine monument classics and 193 professional races. He says: “I’m delighted to be part of this great celebration of cycling and to support such a worthy cause as Action Medical Research.”
Organised annually by Action Medical Research, the Champions of CycleSport Dinner celebrates the charity’s passion for all things cycling and last year raised £180,000 towards its work helping sick babies and children.
The evening is hosted by Sky News anchor Dermot Murnaghan, who will conduct live and exclusive interviews with all the Champions. TV medic Dr Dawn Harper will also be in the house to deliver the welcoming speech. Both are long-term supporters who regularly get on their bikes for the charity.
Guests will also have a chance to bid in a live auction full of highly coveted, exclusive cycling lots including a Team Sky hospitality package for the finale of the 2014 Tour de France, a Tour winner’s jersey signed by Chris Froome and a day’s ride out with Jody Cundy MBE. There is also the chance to bid for an exclusive painting of the ultimate cycling champion, Sir Chris Hoy, donated by artist Paul Oz and signed by Chris himself.
The auction is hosted by BBC cycling commentator Simon Brotherton and sponsored by Frog Bikes. Special guest former footballer Lee Dixon, now a keen cyclist, will also be attending to present a signed, framed Arsenal shirt to the highest bidder.
The event is supported by media partner Rouleur.
