Paddington to support his favourite charity on his home turf
Action Medical Research’s mascot Paddington BearTM will be the guest of honour at a dragon boat race in Paddington Basin to raise funds for the children’s charity.
The Paddington Partnership Dragon Boat Regatta, on the evening of Thursday, 18 June, is in its 15th year and this is the second time it has donated the proceeds to Action Medical Research.
Teams from across the Paddington area will take to the water in a series of timed heats, with the two fastest taking to a nail-biting final.
Nissan, crowned the fastest crew in 2014, will be hoping to retain their title against new entrants from Virgin’s HQ, Misys, Visa Europe, Whizz Education and global award-winning ad agency adam&eveDDB. The team behind the Crossrail station construction at Paddington will be having their own play-off, with four separate project groups from Costain Skanska JV competing against each other to be the fastest paddlers. Architects of Merchant Square Robin Partington & Partners will be challenging their clients European Land while the estate teams from Paddington Central and Merchant Square vie for pole position and staff from Heathrow Express, known for being the fastest from central London to Heathrow Airport, hope to live up to their reputation!
Each dragon boat holds a maximum of 11 crew members: 10 paddlers and a drummer (the minimum number in a boat is six paddlers, plus drummer). There will be prizes for the fastest team and the runner-up, as well as for the best dressed team, and a special Paddington Bear award for the team that raises the most sponsorship.
The event, sponsored by the Paddington Partnership and Merchant Square Paddington, is in aid of Paddington Bear’s favourite UK charity, Action Medical Research, which funds vital research to help sick and disabled children.
Medical research can save and change children’s lives but surprisingly, medical research into conditions that devastate children’s lives is poorly funded. Action Medical Research is currently funding work around stillbirth, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy and brain cancer, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.

Action Medical Research is a leading UK-wide charity working to save and change children’s lives through medical research. We believe that the diseases that devastate the lives of so many of our children can be beaten. We have been funding medical breakthroughs since we began in 1952 like the first polio vaccines in the UK, ultrasound in pregnancy and the rubella vaccine – helping to save thousands of children’s lives and change many more.
Just one breakthrough, however small, can mean the world. Charity reg. nos 208701 and SC039284.
